How to Change Organization Owner in HiveMQ Cloud
Overview
This article explains how to transfer organization ownership in HiveMQ Cloud when the current owner is no longer with the company or needs to be replaced.
Issue Description
When an organization owner leaves the company or needs to be replaced, administrators may need to transfer the owner to another user. The current owner cannot be removed from the organization without first transferring ownership.
Understanding HiveMQ Cloud Organization Roles
HiveMQ Cloud organizations enable users to collaborate on HiveMQ clusters across one or more HiveMQ accounts. When you create a HiveMQ account, a HiveMQ organization is automatically created for the account, and the user who creates the HiveMQ account is assigned as the organization owner with administrative rights for the organization.
Important Limitations
It is not possible to remove the owner of an organization
The Owner of an organization cannot be changed or reassigned
Only the Owner of an organization can invite new members and manage user roles
Resolution Steps
Option 1 #
To designate a new owner when the current owner needs to be replaced, you can delete the organization and create a new one with the desired owner.
Option 2 #
Contact HiveMQ Support to request assistance with organization ownership transfer
Provide the following information:

Current owner details
New owner email address

Alternative Approach
If you need to grant administrative access without changing ownership:
The current Owner can invite new members to the organization
Assign appropriate roles to team members based on their required permissions
Use Role-Based Access Control (RBAC) to define what actions logged-in console users can perform within an organization
Prevention and Best Practices
Ensure multiple administrators have appropriate roles assigned before personnel changes occur
Document your organization's structure and key personnel
Use a shared or departmental email address for the owner account when possible
Regularly review organization membership and roles
Plan for succession when key personnel changes are anticipated
Additional Information
To manage organization members, you must have a running Starter or Enterprise HiveMQ Cloud cluster. User roles and permissions are managed in the Organizations area of your HiveMQ account.
