Why Can’t I Use a Password If I Signed Up with Google/GitHub?

Question

If you signed up for HiveMQ Cloud using a social login (Google, GitHub, or LinkedIn), you won’t be able to log in with a password later or use the "Forgot Password" feature.
This behavior is expected and relates to how social authentication works.

Answer

🔍 Why This Happens

When you use a social sign-in method:

  • Authentication is handled entirely by the third-party provider (e.g., Google, GitHub).

  • HiveMQ does not store or manage a password for your account.

As a result:

  • You cannot create or reset a HiveMQ password for that account.

  • Clicking “Forgot Password” will not send a reset email.

  • You must continue using the same social login provider to access your account.

🚪 How to Use a Password Instead

If you want to switch to a password-based login, follow these steps:

  1. Delete your existing social sign-in account
Contact HiveMQ Support to request this, if needed.

  2. Re-register at http://cloud.hivemq.com
Choose the “Sign up with Email” option.

  3. Set a secure password during registration.

⚠️ Important: Deleting your account will permanently remove any clusters, data, and configurations tied to it.
Make sure to back up all important information before proceeding.
